Set 2 : two notes at the same time

Different combinations of two notes played simultaneously. As for set 1 you can try different articulations and dynamics. Play each exercise once with one hand and once with the other hand.

1 – Each pair of finger

All your five fingers are in contact with the keys. Two of them play an interval while the others don’t move.

2 – Parallel movements

I suggest to play it legato.

3 – Small Jumps

Move your arm.

4 – Back and forth

Play it legato.

5 – Jumps

Don’t play fast and keep the tempo. More…

6 – Extensions

Extensions for each pair of finger. It is similar to the extension exercise of set 1. You can adapt it to your hand to feel a bit of stretch but no pain. Remember that after each stretch the hand returns in a position with the five fingers on five consecutive notes. More…

7 – Tricky situation

This situation may happen sometimes. To play as legato as possible move your arm and don’t strecth your fingers.

8 – Repeated notes

Repeated notes using various fingerings. The last repetitions (fingers 1 and 5 in octave) are 3 with the wrist, 3 with the arm and 3 ‘vibrations’.

9 – Half substitution

Repeat the common note (E) fast to give an impression of legato. The other notes (C and G) must be legato.

10 – Substitution

Use repeating notes to change finger and hand position.

11 – Appoggiaturas

In thirds and sixths. Work your legato !

12 – Gruppetti

Different intervals are presented here. For the octaves, you can use a systematic 1-5 fingering and not play legato if you feel more comfortable. However if you do this exercise in another scale it is easier to use 1-4 on a black key before 1-5 on a white key.

13 – Trills

Play the trills with regularity being comfortable and relaxed. Don’t force to go faster because it creates tension in your fingers.

14 – Repeating notes with two hands

The first time play with the right hand above the left hand, and the second time below.

15 – Trills with two hands

As for exercise 14 The first time play with the right hand above the left hand, and the second time below.

16 – Crossing hands

Play the two notes of the intervals with a perfect simultaneity.

17 – Glissando

For the thirds you can use the fingertips of 2 and 4 to play piano or if the keyboard is light. Alternatively you can use nail of 1 and fingertip of 3 to play forte or with a heavy keyboard.

For the sixths when you use fingers 1 and 5 or 1 and 4 with the right hand : upward 1 with the fingertip, 4/5 with the nail and downward 1 with the nail and 4/5 with the fingertip. With the left hand it’s the same by exchanging upward and downward.

You can also play octaves to replace sixths.
